A specially revised and updated edition aimed at woodland owners – potential and existing - in Ireland
incorporating the latest information concerning rural regulations that affect forestry and the new forestry
grant scheme introduced in 2007. These and other revisions for this special Irish edition have been undertaken
by Ken Gill and include useful addresses, sources of information, and tips on good forestry practice particularly
relevant to conditions in Ireland.
Julian is delighted to welcome Ken Gill as co-author for this edition. Ken is a beef farmer in County Offaly who
became interested in managing his areas of neglected woodland. He did so well that in 2005 he gained a Special
Merit Award and a year later scooped the top honours in the Bio-Diverse Forest/Woodlands category at the annual
RDS/Irish Forest Service Awards which seek to promote excellence that combines production of timber and diverse
forest habitats. Ken is a Board member of CRANN an NGO which seeks to raise awareness of and promote sustainable
woodland management focusing on hardwoods (broadleaves) for the benefit of production and conservation.
Publication is supported by Crann.
The text is richly illustrated by pen and ink sketches, mainly by artist and forester John White but also by Stephen Evans.
